Iontophoresis Facial and Sonophoresis in Scottsdale, AZ

You have a skincare routine. You use quality products. And yet something still feels like it is sitting on the surface — hydration that fades by noon, serums that never quite reach the skin concerns you are actually trying to address. An iontophoresis facial changes the equation.

At a Glance

A 90-minute, no-downtime facial that uses galvanic current and low-frequency ultrasound to deliver Environ vitamins past the skin barrier — into the dermis. Price: $249 per session. Performed by Debbie Valenzuela, Licensed Aesthetician. Part of our full range of facial treatments at Desert Bloom, alongside HydraFacial, chemical peels, and the unicorn facial (PRX-T33) — a no-downtime biorevitalization treatment that uses a different mechanism to stimulate collagen.

What Is an Iontophoresis Facial?

An iontophoresis facial is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses low-intensity direct current (galvanic current) to drive charged active ingredients — vitamins, antioxidants, and peptides — deeper into the skin than topical application alone can reach. Combined with sonophoresis (low-frequency ultrasound), the two technologies work together to dramatically enhance ingredient absorption.

The science behind this combination is well supported. A 2023 review in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science confirmed that iontophoresis can be safely and effectively used for aging, photoageing, hyperpigmentation, oxidative stress, and other dermatological concerns. Research on the combined approach has shown that simultaneous iontophoresis and sonophoresis produces a synergistic effect — meaning the combined absorption is greater than what either technology achieves alone.

At Desert Bloom, this treatment is built around Environ’s professional vitamin formulations. The Ionzyme DF Machine delivers Vitamin A (retinol), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), peptides, and Coenzyme Q10 into the dermis. This is sometimes called a galvanic facial treatment, an ionto facial, or an Environ facial. The underlying technology is the same: electrical current and ultrasound working together to move active ingredients where they are needed.

How It Works: Your 90-Minute Session

Each iontophoresis facial session follows a structured protocol: skin assessment and serum selection, deep cleansing, desincrustation with cathodic current to emulsify sebum, sonophoresis to create temporary microchannels in the stratum corneum, and pulsed iontophoresis to drive vitamins into the dermis. The session closes with SPF and post-treatment guidance.

1. Skin Assessment and Consultation

The session begins with a skin evaluation by Debbie Valenzuela. Following Environ’s established protocols, she selects the appropriate Environ serums based on your skin type, current concerns, and treatment history — ensuring an evidence-backed approach specific to your current skin needs.

2. Cleansing and Preparation

The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove surface impurities, SPF, and makeup. A clean surface ensures optimal contact with the treatment device.

3. Desincrustation Phase

Using the negative galvanic pole (cathodic current), the device softens and emulsifies sebum trapped in the pores. This deep-cleansing step goes beyond what a standard facial cleanser can accomplish and prepares the skin to receive active ingredients more effectively.

4. Sonophoresis — Ultrasound Delivery

Environ serums are applied to the skin, and the sonophoresis wand delivers low-frequency ultrasound waves. These waves produce acoustic cavitation — microscopic bubbles that create temporary microchannels in the stratum corneum, increasing the skin’s permeability. Published research confirms that low-frequency sonophoresis can enhance retinol delivery by up to 292%.

5. Iontophoresis — Galvanic Current Delivery

Pulsed direct current from the positive electrode then drives the ionized vitamins deeper into the dermis via electromigration. The mild electrical current also creates electro-osmosis — a convective flow that carries additional neutral molecules along with it. Most patients describe a mild, comfortable tingling sensation during this phase.

6. SPF and Post-Treatment Care

The session concludes with sun protection and skincare guidance. The skin may appear slightly flushed for 30 to 60 minutes — this is normal and resolves on its own. The entire session takes approximately 90 minutes.

Benefits of Iontophoresis Facial Treatment

The primary advantage of this facial is depth. Where standard topical application reaches the epidermis, iontophoresis and sonophoresis deliver active ingredients to the dermis — the layer where collagen production, hydration regulation, and pigmentation control actually occur.

Results are cumulative. Vitamins — particularly Vitamin A — build in the skin with each treatment session. Most patients notice visible improvement in skin tone and texture within 2 to 4 sessions. For more lasting results, a series of 4 to 6 treatments spaced every 4 to 6 weeks is typically recommended, followed by monthly maintenance sessions.

Who Is This Treatment For?

Who Is a Good Candidate?

An iontophoresis facial may be appropriate if you have any of the following concerns:

  • Fine lines, wrinkles, or early signs of aging
  • Dull, dehydrated, or lackluster skin despite a consistent skincare routine
  • Uneven skin tone, age spots, or sun damage
  • Desire for deeper vitamin delivery without needles or invasive procedures
  • Sensitive skin — sonophoresis is particularly well suited for reactive skin types
  • Looking for maintenance between RF Microneedling, chemical peels, or laser treatments

This treatment can be adapted for a wide range of skin types and is generally appropriate for adults without the contraindications listed below. Many patients at Desert Bloom combine iontophoresis facials with Botox, dermal fillers, or mesotherapy as part of a broader treatment plan. You can book directly — if you are unsure which facial is right for you, book the 90-minute session and Debbie can adjust after evaluating your skin.

When This Treatment May Not Be Right
Do not proceed if you have: a cardiac pacemaker or other electronic implant — the electrical current may interfere with device function; active skin infections, open wounds, or broken skin in the treatment area; epilepsy — electrical stimulation is contraindicated; current pregnancy — the effects of iontophoresis during pregnancy have not been sufficiently studied.

Consult Dr. Borakowski before treatment if you have: metal implants in the face or jaw area; severe rosacea or active inflammatory skin conditions; numbness in the treatment area — the inability to feel sensation means the inability to report discomfort.

The iontophoresis facial is distinct in its mechanism: rather than creating controlled micro-injuries to trigger a healing response, it delivers beneficial ingredients directly into the skin using electrical current and sound waves. This makes it one of the gentlest options for patients who want visible results without any recovery period. For patients with sagging skin or deeper structural concerns, Dr. Borakowski may recommend combining this facial with RF Microneedling or PDO threads.

“This is a great treatment for mature, dehydrated, dull skin, it will provide deep hydration and nourishment without any downtime. At the end of the treatment, a heavy mask is used that covers both the eyes and mouth; if you experience claustrophobia, this treatment may not be recommended for you.” — Debbie Valenzuela, Licensed Aesthetician

“Iontophoresis with sonophoresis is one of the most evidence-backed non-invasive delivery methods we offer. The synergistic effect of combining both technologies means patients receive far more from their vitamins than passive topical application can achieve — and all of this without downtime or discomfort.”

Frequently asked questions

What is an iontophoresis facial? An iontophoresis facial uses low-intensity galvanic current to drive active vitamins and peptides deeper into the skin than topical application alone. At Desert Bloom, it is combined with sonophoresis (ultrasound) for enhanced absorption.
Is an iontophoresis facial painful? No. The treatment is painless at cosmetic intensities. Most patients feel only a mild tingling sensation during the galvanic phases and describe the overall experience as comfortable and relaxing.
How often should I get an iontophoresis facial? An initial series of 4 to 6 sessions every 4 to 6 weeks is typically recommended for visible results. Monthly maintenance sessions help sustain improvements. Frequency is adjusted based on individual response.
What ingredients are delivered during the treatment? The Environ Ionzyme DF Machine delivers Vitamin A (retinol), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), peptides, and Coenzyme Q10. The specific serum formulation is customized to each patient’s skin type and concerns.
Is this the same as a galvanic facial? Iontophoresis is one application of galvanic current technology. A standard galvanic facial typically uses only electrical current. The Desert Bloom treatment adds sonophoresis (low-frequency ultrasound), which research suggests produces synergistic results beyond what either technology achieves alone.
Can iontophoresis help with facial sweating? Iontophoresis is used medically to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), including facial sweating. The iontophoresis facial at Desert Bloom is designed primarily for cosmetic vitamin delivery rather than sweat reduction. Patients with hyperhidrosis concerns should discuss their needs during consultation.
Who should avoid iontophoresis treatment? Patients with a cardiac pacemaker, electronic implants, epilepsy, active skin infections, or those who are pregnant should not receive this treatment. If you have metal facial implants, severe rosacea, or known skin sensitivities, consult Dr. Borakowski before booking.
How long do results last? Results are cumulative and depend on treatment frequency. After a full series, monthly maintenance sessions help sustain improvements in hydration, tone, and texture. Individual results vary based on skin condition, age, and lifestyle factors.
