What Is SKINVIVE by JUVÉDERM?

SKINVIVE by JUVÉDERM is a hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable gel — the first in its class to receive FDA clearance in the United States. Cleared in May 2023 by Allergan Aesthetics, it is designed to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults 21 and older. It is not a traditional dermal filler: it does not add volume, lift facial tissue, or reshape contour. It is a skin quality booster — a product used to improve how the skin looks and feels.

Where traditional fillers restore structure beneath the skin, SKINVIVE works intradermally — within the dermis itself, the layer where smoothness and skin quality are determined. Microdroplets of crosslinked hyaluronic acid gel are placed just below the surface to improve cheek smoothness, hydration, and visible glow. The cheeks are the only area cleared for SKINVIVE use.

An important note about the JUVÉDERM family: at Desert Bloom, SKINVIVE is the only JUVÉDERM product we continue to offer. We no longer use JUVÉDERM Voluma, Volbella, Vollure, Ultra XC, or other volumizing JUVÉDERM fillers — for volume restoration we now use Restylane or RHA fillers. SKINVIVE remains distinct from those volumizers because it is a hydration booster, not a filler — and that distinction is exactly what makes it the right tool for dull, dehydrated cheek skin.

How SKINVIVE Improves Cheek Smoothness

SKINVIVE uses a different approach than traditional injectable fillers. Instead of placing hyaluronic acid deep beneath the skin to create volume, it delivers HA in intradermal microdroplets within the dermis itself — the layer that controls skin smoothness and quality. Once injected, the hyaluronic acid draws and retains natural moisture at the cellular level. The light crosslinking allows the gel to integrate with surrounding tissue rather than forming a structural bolus.

Over the following days, hydration improves — and with it, cheek smoothness, softness, elasticity, and visible glow. Patients describe the result as skin that looks more hydrated and refreshed, not “done.” That is the entire point: the improvement is in how the skin holds moisture, not in adding fullness. Topical products alone cannot achieve the same outcome because the hydration is delivered at a depth no moisturizer reaches.

Unlike laser treatments that improve the skin surface through controlled injury and recovery, SKINVIVE supplements the dermis directly with modified hyaluronic acid. There is no significant downtime, and the treatment is suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types and skin tones.

Results — What to Expect from SKINVIVE

SKINVIVE results are subtle, natural, and cumulative. The face does not look “done” — it looks hydrated, refreshed, and healthy. Patients typically notice improved radiance within the first few days. Over the following 2–4 weeks the full effect emerges: smoother cheek texture, better moisture retention, and a healthier-looking glow. Clinical data from the pivotal trial (NCT03728309): 57.9% of patients achieved a clinically meaningful improvement in cheek skin smoothness at Month 1 on the Allergan Cheek Smoothness Scale — the primary endpoint — versus 4.5% in the control group (p<0.001). FACE-Q patient satisfaction scores improved by an average of +32.0 points, and 58.3% of treated patients were responders for fine lines at Month 1.

Results last up to six months with optimal treatment for cheek skin smoothness. Some providers report hydration effects persisting beyond the labeled duration, though that is not part of the FDA-cleared label. Maintenance treatment every 6–12 months, depending on age and skin condition, can extend the outcome long-term. SKINVIVE Safety and Side Effects

SKINVIVE by JUVÉDERM has a strong safety profile when performed by a properly trained injector. Like all injectable treatments, common injection-site reactions are possible and typically resolve within seven days.

• Temporary redness at the cheek injection points
• Swelling and bruising at the treated areas
• Tenderness or pain at injection sites
• Firmness or small lumps/bumps at injection sites
• Itching

Persistent papules (small bumps) are an uncommon rare side effect; in the clinical trial these were self-resolving within 12–15 months. Patients who plan to have a laser treatment or chemical peel in the same area should wait and discuss timing with Dr. Borakowski. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications may increase bruising risk and should be discussed at consultation.

SKINVIVE can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, though removal is rarely required with this product. This reversibility is available through dermal filler removal at Desert Bloom and is a meaningful safety advantage of all HA-based injectables.
