The Most Studied Wrinkle Treatment in Scottsdale

You notice it in the mirror one morning — a line between the brows that wasn’t there two years ago. Or crow’s feet that stay visible even when you’re not smiling. These are dynamic wrinkles, created when the same facial expressions repeat thousands of times a day until the skin folds with them. Botox is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that relaxes the specific facial muscles responsible, softening those lines without changing how your face moves or expresses emotion.

At Desert Bloom Skincare in Scottsdale, every plan starts with a careful assessment — and an honest answer about whether Botox is right for your face. Botox is one of three neurotoxins offered here, alongside Dysport and Daxxify. Learn more at our botulinum toxin hub.

What Is Botox?

Botox is an injectable form of botulinum toxin type A — a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum bacteria — that temporarily relaxes targeted facial muscles to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. It remains the most widely performed non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States, with roughly 9.1 million Botox injections administered in 2023 alone (ASPS, 2023).

About Botox

The mechanism is precise: botulinum toxin blocks acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, temporarily reducing muscle contraction. The treated muscles still function — they simply contract less forcefully. Frown lines soften. Crow’s feet quiet down around the eyes. Forehead creases become less pronounced. The result is smoother skin, not a frozen face.

Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval for aesthetic use in 2002 for glabellar lines and has since expanded to include forehead lines and crow’s feet. Beyond cosmetic purposes, Botox injections are FDA-approved for chronic migraine, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), overactive bladder, neck spasms (cervical dystonia), and lazy eye — a breadth of medical applications that reflects how well-studied this drug is.

Botox Treatment Areas

Botox injections treat specific facial muscles — each treated area requires different dosing and injection patterns. Dr. Borakowski tailors placement and dose to your anatomy, not a fixed template. The ranges below are typical; your personalized treatment plan is confirmed at consultation.

Upper Face

Lower Face and Neck

Medical Uses

Botox is FDA-approved for several medical conditions beyond cosmetics. Dr. Borakowski treats hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) with 50 units per axilla — results last 4–12 months with consistently strong patient satisfaction reported in clinical use. Botox may also help prevent migraine symptoms by blocking the chemicals that signal pain transmission; chronic migraine protocols use 155–195 units across 31–39 injection sites, typically managed by a neurologist. TMJ tension and bruxism are addressed through the masseter protocol above.

Botox treatment work

How a Botox Appointment Works

Botox injections are performed in a medical office using a thin needle. The treatment area is cleansed, anatomical landmarks are marked, and small amounts of product are placed into the targeted facial muscles. A full upper face (forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet) takes approximately 10–15 minutes. No anesthesia is required — the fine needle (30–32 gauge) means most patients describe only a brief pinch — though topical numbing cream is available on request.

1
Step 1Assessment

Dr. Borakowski reviews your medical history, medications, and aesthetic goals, then evaluates your facial anatomy at rest and in motion — where the muscles pull, where the lines form, and which areas benefit from treatment versus which are better left alone.

2
Step 2Preparation

The injection site is cleansed and marked. No anesthesia is required — the needle is very fine (30–32 gauge). Topical numbing cream is available on request.

3
Step 3Injection

Precise doses are placed into the targeted facial muscles. A full upper face treatment (forehead + frown lines + crow’s feet) typically takes 10–15 minutes.

4
Step 4Aftercare

Remain upright for 2–4 hours. Do not rub or massage the injection sites for 24 hours. Avoid heavy physical activity, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs) for 24 hours. You can resume normal activities immediately.

Noticeable muscle relaxation usually appears within 3 to 7 days, and full results develop by 2 weeks as nerve signals to the treated muscles gradually diminish. The effect lasts approximately 3 to 4 months before facial movement returns (Gadhia & Walmsley, 2009).

Aftercare and Recovery

Botox recovery is straightforward, but the first 24 hours matter. Post-care instructions provided at your appointment reduce the risk of toxin migration and bruising:

Candidacy — Who Gets the Best Results

Ideal Candidate Profile

Patients who see the clearest improvement from Botox

  • Dynamic wrinkles that appear or deepen with facial expressions
  • Good general health with no neuromuscular disorders
  • Realistic expectations — softening, not total erasure
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • No adverse reaction to botulinum toxin or albumin
  • Comfortable with a 3–4 month treatment rhythm

Preventive (“Baby”) Botox. Patients in their late 20s and early 30s are increasingly starting low-dose treatment before lines become etched at rest — reducing repetitive muscle contractions before they carve permanent creases. Evidence is based on clinical observation and expert consensus rather than randomized controlled trials (Humphrey, 2017). In our practice, candidacy for preventive treatment depends on anatomy and muscle activity, not age alone.

When Botox Is NOT the Right Treatment
Not appropriate for: Deep wrinkles visible even without muscle movement — these typically respond better to dermal fillers or resurfacing. Significant skin laxity requiring surgical correction. Pregnancy or nursing. Active skin infection at the injection site. Known allergy to botulinum toxin or albumin. Patients taking certain aminoglycoside antibiotics that potentiate toxin effect. Neuromuscular conditions including myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.

“Not every wrinkle needs Botox. Not every request should be approved.” — Dr. Borakowski

Results — What to Expect

Botox does not erase your face. It softens the specific lines caused by specific muscle movement. When performed well, the outcome is straightforward: you look like yourself — rested, less tense, less tired. People often notice something looks different. They rarely identify what.

Areas for correction botox

Timeline and Duration

Initial improvement appears by day 3–5. Full results develop by 2 weeks. Duration is approximately 3 to 4 months for most patients — roughly three or four sessions per year, at an estimated annual cost of $1,260–$2,520 for a full upper face. With consistent treatments, some patients find their results lasting longer over time as the targeted muscles gradually weaken from reduced activity.

A small number of long-term patients develop neutralizing antibodies, which can reduce effectiveness over years of repeated treatment. If you notice shorter duration or weaker effect, mention it at your next visit. Switching to a different neurotoxin (Dysport or Daxxify) often restores responsiveness.

What Botox Cannot Do

Botox addresses one thing precisely: wrinkles and fine lines driven by muscle movement. It does not correct volume loss, skin texture concerns, sun damage, or true skin laxity. Those concerns require different tools:

A consultation clarifies which tools apply. A personalized treatment plan often combines two or three, sequenced over several months.

Botox vs. Dysport vs. Daxxify

All three are botulinum toxin type A products that work through the same mechanism. The differences are clinically meaningful — not marketing distinctions. Desert Bloom offers all three, and Dr. Borakowski recommends based on your anatomy and goals, not product loyalty.

Conversion ratios matter for pricing: roughly 20 units of Botox equals 50–60 units of Dysport (a 3:1 ratio) or 40 units of Daxxify. Dysport spreads slightly more and is often preferred for broader zones; Botox stays more confined to the injection site, useful around the eyes and mouth. Daxxify offers precision placement plus roughly 50% longer duration than Botox. A forehead treatment costs approximately the same across all three when calculated by area. Combination Treatments

Botox addresses muscle-driven lines and wrinkles. For most patients, it works best as one element of a personalized treatment plan — not as a standalone fix. Common combinations at Desert Bloom:

Combination Treatments

+Botox + Dermal Fillers

Botox softens dynamic lines; fillers restore the volume that accompanies aging in the temples, cheeks, and perioral area. Many patients combine both in a single visit.

+Botox + PDO Thread Lift

Botox is required two weeks before a PDO thread brow lift and recommended before a neck thread lift. Relaxing opposing muscles allows threads to lift more effectively and last longer.

+Botox + RF Microneedling

Botox relaxes the muscles; RF microneedling improves skin texture, pores, and firmness. Schedule Botox first, RF microneedling 2–3 weeks later.

+Botox + Biostimulators (Sculptra)

For patients with significant volume loss — particularly those on GLP-1 weight-loss medications — combining a neurotoxin with a collagen biostimulator addresses dynamic lines and structural decline together.

Safety and Side Effects

Botox has one of the longest safety records in aesthetic medicine. Most people experience little to no discomfort during treatment, and the vast majority of side effects are mild and short-lived.

Common (mild, temporary): bruising at the injection site can occur and typically resolves within a few days, along with minor redness or swelling that resolves within 24–48 hours, and mild headache.

Less common: eyelid ptosis (drooping) is uncommon and typically temporary, usually resolving within 2–4 weeks; asymmetric smile or brow, typically correctable with a small adjustment once the product settles; occasional dry or watery eye when crow’s feet are treated.

Rare: Allergic Reaction and Distant Toxin Spread
All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA black box warning for distant spread of toxin effect. In cosmetic doses in skilled hands, clinically significant distant spread is exceedingly rare — reported primarily in higher-dose therapeutic settings (cervical dystonia, pediatric limb spasticity), not cosmetic injections.

Allergic reactions are also rare. Patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation should discuss this with Dr. Borakowski before treatment.

Risk is reduced significantly when treatment is performed by a skilled provider who understands the anatomy of the facial muscles. Consult your health care provider about which activities to avoid immediately after treatment, and whether any of your current medications — particularly blood-thinning medications or muscle relaxants — need to be paused beforehand.

Why Choose Desert Bloom for Botox in Scottsdale

Scottsdale has over 200 providers offering Botox injections. What differs is who is making the clinical decisions, how they assess your face, and whether they are willing to tell you when less is more — or when Botox is not the right answer.

Dr. Natalya Borakowski

At Desert Bloom, every injection is performed by Dr. Natalya Borakowski or a licensed nurse under her direct supervision. Dr. Borakowski has 17 years of experience in aesthetic medicine, advanced anatomy training through cadaver dissection (Dr. Chris Surek, 2022), and teaches aesthetic medicine as adjunct faculty at the University of Bridgeport. She presented a hands-on masterclass at IMCAS World Congress 2025 in Paris.

This is a clinical aesthetics practice, not a med spa. There is no assembly line. Every plan begins with an honest evaluation — and sometimes that evaluation leads to fewer units than expected, a different treated area, or a different procedure entirely. The approach is conservative: enough to soften the lines that bother you, without flattening the expression that makes you look like you.

Frequently asked questions

Does Botox hurt? Most patients describe a brief pinch. The fine needle (30–32 gauge) means no anesthesia is required. Discomfort lasts only seconds per injection point.
Can Botox look natural? Yes — when performed by an experienced injector who understands facial anatomy. The “frozen” look comes from overtreatment or poor placement, not from Botox itself. At Desert Bloom, the approach is conservative: soften lines, preserve natural facial expressions.
What are the side effects of Botox? Common mild side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, or redness at the injection site, and occasional headache. Less common: eyelid ptosis (drooping), which is uncommon and typically temporary, usually resolving within 2–4 weeks. Rare: allergic reaction or distant toxin spread. All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA black box warning for distant toxin spread, though this risk is exceedingly rare at cosmetic dosages.
How many units of Botox do I need? It depends on which areas you are treating and the strength of your facial muscles. A full upper face typically requires 40–60 units. Use our Botox calculator for a preliminary estimate; Dr. Borakowski confirms your count at your complimentary assessment.
How long does Botox last? Approximately 3 to 4 months for most patients. Daxxify, a newer alternative available at our clinic, has a median duration of 6 months.
Can I get Botox while pregnant or breastfeeding? No. Most health care providers advise against Botox during pregnancy and nursing due to uncertainty about its presence in breast milk.
Do I need to stop my medications before Botox? You may need to pause blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, high-dose vitamin E) for several days before your appointment to reduce bruising risk. Always share your full medication list and medical history at consultation.

I wouldn’t go to anyone else for aesthetic care in the Valley. Dr. Natalya is truly the most trusted, skilled, and humble aesthetic physician I’ve ever met. She delivers results that look natural, refined, and beautiful — not just for me, but for everyone I’ve referred to her. I’ve had multiple services here, including Botox/Dysport, and I absolutely love her conservative, thoughtful approach. You simply tell her what you’re hoping to achieve, and she (and her amazing team) will guide you toward exactly what will create those results. One of the biggest transformations for me was laser scar removal. I had terrible scars from a past accident, and after only two laser treatments, they’re practically gone. I’m excited for my final treatment to completely finish the healing process. I also had a large lipoma removed, which had become painful and uncomfortable. Dr. Natalya removed it entirely — and it has never returned. If you’re looking for the best aesthetic care in the Valley, from injectables to scar treatments to minor procedures, I cannot recommend Dr. Natalya and her team enough. They are truly the gold standard.

I had such an amazing experience with Dr. Natalya and Desert Bloom Skincare. From the moment I called, her husband answered the phone with such kindness, explaining everything so clearly and making me feel comfortable right away. It’s rare to see a couple work together with such love, support, and professionalism — it was truly a blessing to witness. Dr. Natalya’s care and expertise were outstanding, and to top it all off, she even gave me a discount just to make sure I looked my best. That kind of generosity shows how much they truly care. I can’t recommend them highly enough — they are a beautiful team, both personally and professionally!😍

I just had my first lip filler removal with Dr. Natalya, and I can’t recommend her enough! She made me feel so welcome and comfortable throughout the entire procedure, which really helped ease my nerves. The staff was also incredibly kind and attentive. If you’re considering filler removal or any treatment, I highly recommend Dr. Natalya, she is amazing!
