How lip filler works

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid — a sugar molecule the body produces naturally — injected into specific areas of the lip to add volume, define the border, or correct asymmetry. The gel binds water, so results are visible immediately and continue to settle over the following two weeks as initial swelling resolves.

Most patients reach their final result by two weeks. Hyaluronic acid lip filler typically lasts six to twelve months before the body gradually metabolizes it; maintenance timing varies by metabolism and the product used.

Filler can restore lost volume, balance an uneven lip, and refine shape. It cannot lift a heavy upper lip caused by descent, change the skin quality around the mouth, or substitute for a lip lift in patients with a long philtrum. When filler isn't the right tool, Dr. Borakowski will say so at consultation.

On all photos Revanesse Versa HA filler was used, vertical tenting technique commonly known as Russian lips, dose varies between 0.6mls to 1 ml. We never use more than 1ml of filler for the lips to prevent filler migration and other complications.

FAQ

About these results

How were these photos taken?
Every before and after pair is photographed in our Scottsdale office using the same camera, lighting, distance, and head angle. No filters, smoothing, or retouching is applied. The "after" timing is noted on each featured case because swelling resolves over the first two weeks.
How long until I see my final result?
Volume is visible immediately, but initial swelling can make lips look fuller than the settled result for the first few days. Most patients reach their true final result at two weeks. We schedule any touch-up assessment after that point, not before.
Am I a candidate for lip filler?
Most healthy adults seeking volume, definition, or symmetry correction are candidates. Active cold sores, certain autoimmune conditions, pregnancy, and breastfeeding are reasons to wait or avoid. A long philtrum or heavy upper lip may be better served by a lip lift — Dr. Borakowski will tell you honestly at consultation.
Are these patients paid or employees?
No. Every image is a real Desert Bloom patient who consented to share their photos for education. None are compensated, and none are staff. We only publish pairs where the patient explicitly approved use.
How much filler will I need?
Most results on this page used 0.5 to 1.5 ml. First-time patients are capped at one syringe per session — building gradually produces a more natural outcome and lets us assess how your lips respond. The right amount for you is decided together at consultation.
What should I expect at the consultation?
A complimentary 30-minute assessment of your lip anatomy, a discussion of your goals, and an honest recommendation — including whether filler is the right tool at all. If we proceed the same day, treatment takes about 30 minutes. There's no pressure to book treatment at the consultation.
