Meaningful Skin Results Without the Week of Recovery
If you have been putting off a laser treatment because you cannot afford the downtime — this is the conversation worth having. The CO2 CoolPeel delivers real laser resurfacing results using ultra-short microsecond pulses that remove only the outermost skin layer, leaving surrounding tissue intact.
Most patients experience 1–3 days of redness and mild peeling, then return to their routine. No extended downtime. No guesswork. Part of our laser skin treatments at Desert Bloom, with consultation and treatment planning by Dr. Borakowski — see also CO2 laser resurfacing for deeper correction.

What Is a CO2 Cool Peel?

A CO2 cool peel is a superficial laser skin resurfacing treatment that improves skin texture, tone, and pore size without the extended recovery of traditional CO2. It uses the Rohrer Phoenix CO2 laser with H-Pulse technology — ultra-short microsecond pulses that ablate the damaged surface layer while precisely limiting heat to surrounding tissue.
The result is effective skin resurfacing with 1–3 days of downtime, compared to the 7–10 days typical of full CO2 resurfacing. CoolPeel is not a lighter compromise — it is a fundamentally different approach to delivering CO2 energy, designed for patients who want to improve their skin without disrupting their schedule. Most patients see noticeable improvement in texture and radiance after just one session; optimal results build over a recommended series of three treatments.
How CoolPeel Works

CO2 lasers emit at 10,600 nm — a wavelength absorbed by water in skin cells. Traditional CO2 treatments use millisecond pulses that drive heat deep into surrounding tissue, delivering dramatic results but requiring 7–10 days of recovery.
CoolPeel works differently. The Rohrer Phoenix H-Pulse technology uses microsecond pulses to ablate the skin surface with precision and depth control before heat accumulates in deeper layers. The fractional pattern treats columns of skin while leaving intact bridges of tissue between them — faster, more comfortable healing with the same proven CO2 wavelength.
Collagen production then continues to improve firmness and skin texture over the weeks and months following treatment. This is what makes CoolPeel an innovative resurfacing strategy: the same gold-standard CO2 wavelength, precisely delivered to achieve the surface result without the deeper thermal consequence.
What CoolPeel Treats

CoolPeel addresses mild to moderate skin concerns across the face and select body areas. It is most useful for patients who want improvement in skin tone, texture, pigmentation, pores, and early signs of sun damage with minimal downtime.
- Fine lines and early wrinkles
- Sun damage and sunspots
- Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores
- Mild acne scars
- Age spots and melasma
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Under-eye texture and crepiness — periorbital area only; very minimal treatment on upper eyelids
- Mild crepiness on the neck and hands. For chest sun damage, a photo facial or other non-laser treatment is usually preferred
For sun damage correction and early photoaging, results are typically noticeable after the first session. Deeper concerns — significant scarring or severe laxity — respond better to full CO2 laser resurfacing.

How a CoolPeel Session Goes
- 1
Consultation and skin assessment
Dr. Borakowski reviews your skin type, history, and goals to confirm CoolPeel is the right approach. Fitzpatrick type, isotretinoin history, and any cold-sore history are documented.
- 2
Topical anesthetic applied
Extra-strength topical numbing cream is applied 30–45 minutes before treatment. Most patients describe discomfort during the session as mild — a warm pinprick sensation.
- 3
H-Pulse delivery
The Rohrer Phoenix CO2 hand-piece is passed across the treatment zone in measured strokes. Microsecond pulses ablate the surface layer in a fractional pattern, leaving intact bridges of healthy tissue between treated columns.
- 4
Cool-down and aftercare review
Skin appears pink to red and feels warm — similar to a light sunburn. The post-care kit is provided: gentle cleanser, occlusive jelly, and moisturizer. Aftercare instructions are reviewed step by step.
- 5
Session complete
Total chair time is 15–30 minutes. You can leave without bandages or downtime makeup. Most patients return to normal activities the same day; mild redness and tightness resolve over the following 1–3 days.
Recovery — Day by Day
Day 0
Treatment day
Mild redness, warm sensation similar to a light sunburn. Numbing cream wears off within an hour.
Day 1
Tight skin, mild swelling
Use the gentle cleanser and moisturizer from the post-care kit. Stay out of direct sun.
Day 2
Mild peeling begins
Keep skin hydrated. Continue avoiding sun and active skincare ingredients.
Day 3
Back to work
Many patients return to work. Light makeup may be applied if skin feels ready.
Days 4–7
Pinkness fades
Skin feels progressively smoother. SPF 30+ stays mandatory daily.
Weeks 2–4
Texture builds
Texture and tone continue to improve as collagen remodeling progresses.
Months 1–3
Full results
Final results become visible as collagen production continues.
Traditional CO2 resurfacing, by comparison, typically requires 7–10 days of social downtime — often with more significant peeling and post-procedure care demands. The difference is not subtle: most CoolPeel patients are back to their normal routine within three days.
Aftercare
- All patients receive a medical-grade post-care kit with gentle face wash, occlusive jelly, and moisturizer — products chosen to reduce risk of complications and support optimal healing
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer for the first 3–5 days
- SPF 30+ sunscreen daily on the face and any treated area
- Avoid direct sun for at least 2 weeks to prevent PIH risk
- No exfoliants, retinoids, or active ingredients for 5–7 days
- No saunas or strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours
- Keep skin hydrated — drink water, apply moisturizer frequently
Safety — Risks and Side Effects
Temporary redness, mild swelling, and tightness are expected in the first few days and resolve on their own. As with any ablative laser procedure, CoolPeel carries a small risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — which is why Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin types are not candidates for CO2 laser at Desert Bloom. Infection risk is low but real.
Scarring is rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced provider and aftercare instructions are followed carefully. Dr. Borakowski evaluates every patient individually during consultation and adjusts energy settings based on skin type, treatment zone, and tolerance.

Results — What to Expect

Results are progressive. Many patients notice smoother, more radiant skin after a single session, but optimal outcomes build over the recommended series of three CoolPeel treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. Collagen remodeling continues for months after the final session.
In our clinical experience, many patients maintain visible improvement for 6–12 months depending on sun exposure and skincare consistency. Annual maintenance sessions help sustain texture and tone improvements long term. Most patients are pleased with how much their skin texture and tone improve — without having taken a week off from their lives. See more before and after results.
