Unwanted Hair

Laser hair reduction is a medical laser treatment that damages hair follicles so fewer, finer hairs grow back. At Desert Bloom in Scottsdale, laser hair reduction uses the Quanta EVO Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser, treats all skin types and is priced per area for a series of 6 visits, from $210 for extra small areas such as the upper lip.

When is laser hair reduction worth considering?

  • Shaving every day or waxing every 3 to 4 weeks
  • Ingrown hairs and razor bumps on the neck, underarms or bikini line
  • Unwanted hair on the upper lip, chin or jawline
  • Hair on the back, chest, legs or arms

What causes unwanted hair growth?

  • Genetics
  • Hormone changes, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can cause new facial hair and may need a medical check
  • Shaving and waxing, which cause ingrown hairs and irritation

How we assess it

How does Desert Bloom check if laser suits you?

Before your first session, Dr. Natalya Borakowski, NMD confirms that laser suits your skin and hair. The Alexandrite 755nm wavelength is used for lighter skin (Fitzpatrick I to III) and the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength for darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV to VI). Blonde, gray, white and red hair have little pigment for the laser to target, so laser works poorly on them, and you will be told this before you pay.

At home

How should you prepare for laser hair reduction?

Shave the area 24 hours before each visit. Do not wax, pluck or tweeze between sessions, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Keep the area out of the sun before and after treatment, and wear SPF 30 if it is exposed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Each area is treated as a series of 6 visits, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart depending on the area. 6 visits are needed because the laser only affects hairs in the active growth phase, and only 20% to 30% of hairs are in that phase at any one time. Touch-up visits are available at a lower price after the series.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The FDA allows laser to be described as permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. After a full series, most people see 70% to 90% less hair in the treated area. Some hair can regrow over time, especially with hormone changes, and touch-up visits keep the result.

Does laser hair removal work on dark skin?

Yes. Desert Bloom uses the Nd:YAG 1064nm wavelength for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV to VI), which targets the hair root while passing the pigment in the skin more safely. Lighter skin is treated with the Alexandrite 755nm wavelength.

Does laser help ingrown hairs?

Yes, usually. With fewer and finer hairs growing back, there are fewer hairs to curl back into the skin, which is why laser hair reduction often helps razor bumps on the neck and bikini line.

What does a touch-up visit cost?

After the 6 visit series, touch-up visits cost $40 for an x-small area, $70 for a small area, $100 for a medium area, $140 for a large area and $200 for an x-large area.
